2017 Formula 1 - The next generation

Especially with reports of a substantial lift to engine performance

Be interesting to see if that list compromises performance at all, as it wasnā€™t exactly flawless last season

More power and better drivability apparently. May Hamilton may be able to get it off the line now :smirk:

Hmmmm perhaps another difficult year for Macā€¦

Not sure about the Fezzer eitherā€¦

Me thinks the carbon fibre shops are going to be rather busy this year!

Hoping for something better from Red Bull tbhā€¦

Hondaā€™s F1 programme leader Yusuke Hasegawa said the end of the token system for engine development had allowed his company to work aggressively over the winter.

ā€œWe improved every area of the engine that was [previously] restricted,ā€ he said.

"There were areas that we wanted to modify from the original engine to extract more power, and the car was changing dramatically so we wanted to redesign the engine.

ā€œWe have a modified engine, a lower centre of gravity and less weight.ā€

Agreed. Itā€™s like the oversized front wings of a couple of years ago. There will be bits everywhere.

How can you tell from the photos ?

Absolutely no idea tbh, but as many have said if it looks right itā€™ll go wellā€¦

Anyhow none of these teams are making over confident noise like Mercedes are at the moā€¦

Anyway weā€™ll see soon enoughā€¦ :grinning:

As is usual, the devil is in the detail. The diffuser, which will have a greater influence this year, in each has been kept away from prying eyes. Likewise, the ā€œreleaseā€ spec is generally different from ā€œtestingā€ spec which in turn is different from ā€œracingā€ spec. The only real show of how good (or otherwise) they all are will be in Australia.

Iā€™ve found where McLaren got their inspiration fromā€¦

Hahaā€¦ Brilliant!!

To be fair to McLaren, there are some exquisite detail work in the design. Whether it works in practice is a different questionā€¦

Barge boards, front wing details are obvious. But there are also so clever ideas with slots in rear wing and front wing mounting. Plus some quite interesting stuff under the body behind the front wheels.

Thereā€™s seems to be a lot of discussion as to the merit of using the ā€˜T wingā€™, Merc arenā€™t yet decided on it afaikā€¦

But as you say, a lot of cars have fabulous details, and the micro management of the air flow, is being taken to new levelsā€¦

More detail of rear wing can be seen hereā€¦

And some excuses can be seen hereā€¦

Alonso, looking disgruntled, about being ā€œhappyā€ with McLaren-Honda.

Itā€™s been annoying me since the first renders were released but the designs reminded me of something. Anyone remember A1 Grand Prix ?

Just without the anhedral nose treatmentā€¦
