Of course the point that is being overlooked in the reporting of the so called breaking of the public sector pay cap, is that it’s a very empty gift when there’s no additional funding to go with it!
Effectively the government has handed down a cost pressure which will only lead to further downscaling of services and potential job losses.
With that in mind it’s hardly surprising that they haven’t made any announcement on the pay cap (on top of annual increments which are unaffected) for the NHS. Nearly all commissioners are running deficits of 3-6% which they are expected to find savings to balance in year, and most providers (>80%) have similar if not greater deficits and existing cost pressures.
Yep. Pay inflation pressure is already 1.5% over and above funding allocation increases.
Then you add prescribing and medical tech inflation, estates etc, and then the biggie which is demand increases especially for urgent and long term care - it’s not hard to see why all the talk is currently about cuts and rationing.
Does anyone else feel like we are sleep-walking into a dictatorship under May. She’s quite nasty in my view. Dangerous. This latest power-grab is quite sickening and undemocratic.
Fully agree. She’s doing this for the Tories and to shore up her weak position. If the doubters on her backbenches see her pass this they will be less likely to want her out.
It will all depend how they use the powers in relation to the Bill. These powers are used all the time in Government to put in place and/or amend secondary legislation so the question is how many major changes to exiting EU law will she change when translating them into UK law. What one person considers minor may well be major to another. Not so much crossing the “Is” and dotting the “Ts” as changing the whole fricking paragraph.
The way i see it each time the Government tries to sneak one under the radar they will be pulled up on it, either by a members debate or in committee. This will mean at least a year of utter chaos and disarray for the Tories, that’s no bad thing.
Bodes well for the Brexit negotiations, that the Tories can’t even get a good deal from people that always agree with them already, despite bribing them a cool billion.
