Pork Faff Therapy/ What are you eating?

Going to have a stab at doing a sort of Chicken Wellington this evening. Got guests coming so just the right time to royally fuck a dish up.

Where are you?

we were at Brasserie Blanc - started in the Mermaid (drank rather more cider than I should for early evening) got to Blanc via The Boot.

We are stuffed and Louise who is far more sensible than me has to work tomorrow, so just got a taxi home.

We haven’t been out in St Albans for ages, although as Louise just remarked, getting the bus to St Albans and a taxi back costs us £25, and two returns to Kings Cross with her gold card costs £11 - guess why we spend more time at Kings X than St Albans despite the latter being far closer

Yesterday was Tapas/Mezes day. A pork mince burger, Gyoza, Char Siu bun, BBQ’d prawn skewers and prawn Sashimi.

Today: BBQ’d sirloin with home-grown courgette slaw, and roasted beetroot and fetta.

We’ve just got back from having dinner here http://www.coloradogrillwh.com/home.html. Here’s the menu http://www.coloradogrillwh.com/menu.html. We had the deep-fried cheesecake for dessert. Yes, really. With ice-cream. And whipped cream. And strawberry sauce. And chocolate sauce. This is beginning to feel like a very dangerous holiday indeed.

How’s the pro Confederacy vibe down there? Any flags out or statues being pulled over?

Not sure yet, we only got into town from Ohio last night (in case it helps the time here is 6 hours earlier than than the UK). We are definitely in the rural south - the accent, the manner and to an extent the dress of the local folks gives that away immediately. And the temperature on I65 yesterday hit 95F and raised a huge and impressive anvil thunderhead towards the end of the afternoon. But we may find out more today. If I can prize my brother away from the Spurs match (live on the TV in his hotel room) we’ll venture into Nashville later.

There is a little trepidation about getting bogged down in traffic. Earlier estimates were that the Nashville area (say a 20 mile radius from the city centre) might expect anything between 100,000 and 400,000 incoming visitors hoping to catch the eclipse. So far everything’s been fine. But all the locals have filled their cars with gas. They’re expecting the gas stations to run out. I may fill mine this morning at Nervous Charlie’s. He appears to sell fireworks as well as gas https://www.yelp.com/biz/nervous-charlies-white-house. Only in America.

Long lunch at one of our favourite pubs, the Crooked Billet in Stoke Row. Every August they have their Lobster Festival.
The special set menu was as follows:
Select any starter; Narelle chose Pork Belly with a poached egg and I had Haggis with a fried duck egg on sourdough.
Then a whole Lobster Thermidor each.
Accompanied by a bottle of Chablis Domaine Sainte Claire (or a champagne or Provence Rose).
Excellent value.

Now using tortilla chips as a spoon to eat the soup, mmmmmmmmm.

Bloody hipsters, are you using an old hub cap as a bowl

Hipsters would never use anything as practical as an edible spoon.

We’re all going here http://www.foxinthesnow.com/ for brunch in an hour or so. Could be a bit hipster (there were a few in here http://www.wolfsridgebrewing.com/tap/ on Thursday). My sister-in-law loves the brunch place though.
