You generally say goodbye as you are leaving, not after you have left!
It is pretty standard practice for the account to be closed, it is not deleted, work can still access any emails coming into your account and they will have set up an OOO reply. Your log in will be cancelled and you will disappear off the Outlook directory though.

I intend to delete my e mail account a few weeks before I leave by telling the IT oiks a porky around my leaving date. failing that I’ll certainly have an auto reply stating that e mails wont be replied to at least two weeks before I retire and that my successor (tbc) will answer them. Why make life difficult

Jim, you may not have an email account but you will still have to negotiate a time and date for your Christmas ‘office party’ with Mrs. Jim. I’d start working on it now, I’ve never quite managed it since retirement, I’ve been time managed
