The key is to use it when it isn’t on the top rate, and an electric car will help with that.
Also bear in mind that binning gas standing charges makes a big difference.

That’s where things are different with an ASHP. They cannot get the water temp to anything like that. I think it’s more like a max of 25°. In fact you’ll need to make sure your underfloor pipework and any radiators are suitable for the lower temp. We have huge double rads in the parts of the bungo with no underfloor heating (bedrooms) They only get warm but keep the ambient temp in the room at normal levels because of their large surface area.
Likewise, that’s why they’re saying you need a new hot water tank - it will be partly immersion because the ASHP cannot produce water hot enough for showers/baths (around 45°).
Yeah. Unfortunately our Falcon Rangemaster is gas hob and you’d have to pry that out of wife’s cold dead hands to swap it.
That and they are ££££’s and built to outlast us.
So would be paying the standing charge just for a gas hob😬
Watched this vid earlier today.
He said near the end somewhere that the installation team told him he could go up in the loft and switch to emergency immersion if the heat pump failed and he required hot water.
It ain’t pretty but it would not be on show where we intend it.
Hmmmm, well our Mitsubushi system is 4 years old. Maybe they’re different now and can achieve much higher temps.
What do you reckon Stephen @MrKettle?
Think they support much higher temps now Jim. Although 75C seems…enthusiastic
I mean if I see anyone running a gas boiler over 60C it’s conniption time.
Perhaps when it’s 40°C outside😂
Where’s our resident layabout plumber? Probably measuring a festive Kipling abomination.
Not sure what our Mitsubishi can do, but I don’t think I have seen the flow temp above 50ºC at any point. However we don’t use the heat pump for hot water (Sunamp/Eddi).
The Octopus surveyor will want to see the UFH Polypipe manifolds and the schematic / design cals.
We also have the house thermal efficiency calcs and measurements.
Reams and reams of it.
They are making the right impression so far…
You Sir, i respectfully suggest, are now speaking fucking gibberish.
This is the main reason I haven’t considered going down this route, I understand absolutely none of it.
Engineers live for this sort of 'gibberish’
I get that, entirely. It doesn’t really help the average Luddite consumer though.
For good informed information on heat pumps, and all the pros and cons look at Heat Geeks on youtube.
I’m Heat Geeks clued up👍
Liked his test using mirrors to gain more sun warmth around the evaporator, whilst heating HW🙂
Another vid was probably applicable to us… discussing the fact that the 6HW output is too high if you have an efficient home.
HP will cycle, uses more juice.
Gonna be interesting talking to them on Monday again (have more questions), and eventually the surveyor.
Apparently it’s a very detailed analysis of home’s thermal properties (perhaps depends on what data already exists).
Had the survey.
Measured the volume of the whole house.
Looked at windows, insulation, heat mapped the underfloor heating etcetera.
Going to chat with them today about there calcs.
Found this interesting video on heat pump sizing
Some of the comments are as interesting as the video - some have ASHP sizing spot on, many are massively over quoted in capacity.
The Canada temp discussed make Sweden (lived there for 10 years), look warm!
Father in-law has had a heat pump there for the last 20years!
We use ~9975KWH of gas a year. Have a comfortable temp all year.
So would need a ASHP of around 3.5KW capacity.
Lets see what the supplier says.
their
Predictive/ corrective text at work😉
You actually really read something quite long and didn’t just TLDR it!
You are improving on me a tiny bit🙂
Do you have anything constructive to add?
If you did you might be more useful than a keyboard warrior grammar PED / twat!
