I watched the Ipswich v Liverpool game last night and realised that out of a squad of 20, Liverpool had only 2 British players represented. Both players were substitutes, of which only 1 had game time.
Somehow it seems so wrong not to have British players in a Premier League side. American owners, Spanish manager, goodness knows who make the backroom staff up, a squad of foreign players presumably here for the money and not the club and minimal representation by home grown players. It seems wrong, perhaps Liverpool FC should be renamed Anfield International FC. The pressure to win is enormous but seems to be eroding local identity, Curtis Jones has left, Liverpools last link with Liverpool FC, possibly some coming through the academy, I donât know.
Anyway gripe over, more British players please .

I had a guy give me a long rant about how he hated the NFL and the Hundred having franchise systems rather than clubs, but really thereâs little difference between them and the big football clubs now.

Yeah half a comment as I had to do some dad taxi.
I see clubs as local entities that invest in the local areas, both relating to football and otherwise. Their talent might come up through the ranks, and the teams that invest more often reap rewards with youth players. This is a good investment, as it increases the chances of staying in the top division.
A franchise is a business that partakes in a league. Generally there isnât the relegation jeopardy in a franchise system, so they are less bothered about local investment.
The big football clubs have become mostly immune to relegation, so they donât need to do the same local investment. And the youth stuff they they do is rather commoditised: my nephew âplayed for Villaâ because he was in one of their numerous youth teams, but this was more a business for Villa than an investment in local youth football.
This means that the likes of Wayne Rooney coming up through a youth squad and joining his local team is much rarer nowadays. It also means that the EFL is really good, as foreign players flood here for the money.
Sorry, but the football league is fuck all like a âfranchiseâ the key elements being relegation: yes; draft picks: no.
Define âbecome.â Liverpool (1954), Arsenal (1913), Manchester United (1974), Chelsea (1988), Spurs (1977). All relegated nearly 40 years ago or longer. What is the statute of limitations? Was anyone comparing them to franchises 20 years ago, 30, 40 or more?
Villa and Forest, both former European Cup winners have both been relegated relatively recently. Do you think theyâre big clubs?
No it isnât.
The EFL is really good because it has massive attendances compared to any comparable tier in Europe. This drives revenues and player quality.
None of this is anything to do with franchises.

Thought we deserved a point, to be honest but missing a penalty at 0-0 was the turning point.
