Sorry vegans, not only have humans been eating animal protein throughout their evolution, it turns out we’ve been cooking it for a lot longer than previously thought - over three-quarters of a million years, so that’s Homo heidelbergensis era - before the Denisovan/Neanderthal/sapiens split.

(phys.org get some things wrong, especially the taphonomic interpretation of the pharyngeal dentaries, but the original article is behind a paywall for most of us)
