The Fifth Solvay Conference - 1927. Let’s get a few people together to see whether we can thrash out quantum mechanics. 17 of the 29 attendees had either already won a Nobel prize or subsequently would, including Marie Curie who had two, in two different subjects.

Marie Curie probably could. She refined more than a tonne of pitchblende ore down to produce just one tenth of a gramme of radium chloride. She was looking after her pre-school daughter at the same time. A few years later, at the age of 39 and now with a second child, she was widowed. It didn’t stop her working though and she still found time to start an affair with Langevin (that’s him, on the other side of Einstein) who was five years younger than her and married at the time.
