Two Maori girls with chin mokos in an ancient greeting, circa 1900, before Ta Moko tattoos were outlawed by British colonialists
An elderly Maori lady I knew (She was Kiri Te Kanawa’s first singing coach)
had an amazing set of photos on display in her home.
One was of her grandfather who was part of the first New Zealand Maori team to play outside NZ in 1926 and another was of her great aunt resplendant with a Ta Moko
Her great aunt was sent to Europe to be educated as a ‘lady’.
She hated it and absconded from the school and made her way back to New Zealand (quite an achievement in it’s own right). Her family were intent on sending her back so she went off and got a chin Moko knowing that there was no way the family would send her back to ‘polite society’ with a facial tattoo.
As is the way of these things I had never heard of a Moko until the photo was explained to me, but the very next day I got in the car and the radio was set on R4 and Woman’s Hour was on.
The subject? The return of the chin Moko with modern Maori women.
His Cityscape paintings are superb.
Superb! I love the more impressionistic stuff - not sure where it lies in his timeline - but I especially like it when things go a bit Z͍̤͙͉̗̼͓̞̺̻̞̮̯͉̰̔̔̓̎̿̀̑͗ͦͨ͛ͥͨͣͩ͜͡a̩̟̞̹̲̓̄̓̑̅͢ḽ̤͉̤͇̱͍̮̖̽̓ͮ̿̆̎ͪ̋̚g̷̛̟̞̗͕̲̯̙̭̱̳̼̭͍ͯ̊ͦ̔ͩ̒ͣͯͩ͆͐̂̚o̎̃̉̍ͬ:

Love it all, such a huge talent.
Just looked at some of his work. If you can find a print available, they are not as expensive as I imagined. $975
My youngest son has the full facial moko.

Have much want. A signed print is now on the list of things to find.

Yes I’ve been hovering over that and thinking about where it might go in the house.
Shame the chance of owning an original of that NY series has now sailed.
