Woodstock was going on… meanwhile in France
The last épée duel in France was fought in 1967, between the Mayor of Marseille and the Socialist Party candidate for president.
The duel took place in a private property in Neuilly-sur-Seine, west of Paris, and was officiated by Jean de Lipkowskiin, who then was France’s Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs. Ribière was to be married the following day. Defferre vowed to wound him in such a way as to spoil his wedding night very considerably.
The first touch was against Ribière on the arm, but he called for the resumption of the duel. After a second touch on the arm against Ribière, the duel was stopped by Lipkowskiin.

About 27 years late for the French to decide they’re brave and honourable.

Don’t mess with those Nonnas, you’ll end up sleeping with the fishes!
You are the only other person other than my wife that I have heard that term from.
She got some Italian heritage Cosmo?
I’m sitting 6 ft away from nonna.
BiL is Italian and it has always been thus.
Well, I am on my second bottle of wine after being dry since September and might of mixed up my wife’s grandparents and my sisters in-laws.
Oh, man I feel that.
I’ve been getting loads of condolence cards from innumerable Austrian cousins. My mum had 4 sisters and 2 brothers, and they all had loads of kids, and there was some duplication of names…
And Claire has been asking me “so who was their mum/dad?” and I really, really struggle to remember them all.
Our family tree is very simple but I still struggle due to never meeting some of them.
Big families are complicated to keep in your head if they are not part of your daily routine but sounds as if they are very close and care, lovely to get so many cards.
They are really tightly knit over there, across multiple generations. Mum had a really good grip on it. When I went to visit here there was always news of another cousin x times removed being born or someone who’d gone to Uni or whatever and she despaired of my lack of being able to get my head around who was who…
It’s lovely to get all the cards though, and to realise how much they all loved her over there.
