Jaysus, where’s that baseball bat when you need it
Bourgeois cap.
I’d never seen this aerial view of post-war housing in Pollok, Glasgow photographed in June 1966.
We moved there in 1972 and the arrow indicates the flat where I grew up.
What a ni e image to have now though.
Excellent photograph that captures the planners idyll. My experience of Pollock and possibly yours, was not that.
X.
A sweaty & tired Dennis Lillee after The Ashes Fifth Test was won by Australia at Adelaide Oval on January 30, 1975…
Is any of it left? It’s difficult to see where it actually was on Google Maps.
The red areas where all demolished and given to private housing - in the yellow area they took the top two floors off refurbished the remaining two floors.
It’s a bit further to the North
Whinhill Road is my old place - the arrow is the area I highlighted in yellow.
Just interested to see what they left & what they replaced.
This is roughly the position of my old house on Whinhill Road.
This is Linthaugh Road which looked down onto my old road. My mistake it was only the top floor of the middle block of flats and the top two floors of the end blocks.
These are what’s left of the original flats in the old pic.
Presumably the scheme didn’t function as intended? Can you recall why? As 60’s developments go it doesn’t appear that bad from the pic. Amenities such as communal spaces, retail, healthcare missing?
Actually, AI gives a fairly comprehensive answer ![]()
This was only a small part of the whole Pollok scheme which covered a huge area and was formed from parts of the original old Pollok Estate.
Parts of the original estate still exist within Pollok Country Park with Pollok House and the Burrell Museum house within it.
Our particular bit was great - a lot of wooded areas and even had it’s own fully fledged castle
The problems, as always, were people. The council for terrible maintenance and not providing enough amenities for the size of the place. Also, a lot of the tenants simply didn’t give a fuck about looking after place.
