I shouldn’t imagine any one misses the Watneys Red Barrel
The beer that single handedly guaranteed the success of CAMRA

Soon as I saw the picture, despite not seeing the street sign, felt it’s familiarity. First thing that came to mind, that’s the market in Soho
I arrived in the UK in 91 and worked in Piccadilly Circus. Remember going up the grubby alley off Brewer St and finding the market. Had never seen anything like it before. A real treat, used to pop up at lunch time sometimes. It didn’t look so different to these pics in 1991
Had some great times up there, thanks for the nice little reminder
Ella Fitzgerald with Dizzy Gillespie & Ray Brown in the background, Downbeat Club, New York City, September 1947.
That would have been some gig!
It certainly would’ve been - I’d have the same look as DG watching Ella sing.
Actually it wasn’t Watneys Red Barrel it was Watneys Red. The Red Revolution was the advertising campaign and the beer was dyed red and tasted awful.
Hnnnnnggggg!
I think we are both right, same thing different terms at different times.
This is the advert I remember as a kid
Watneys were hit badly by the publicity and suffered a sales slump. But then dropped Red and introduced Fine and London Real Ale, changed the livery of there pubs to eclectic.
And were still shit
I remember the Youngs Pub (Jolly Gardners IIRC) right outside Watneys Mortlake brewery, we used to joke that there was a direct line from the urinals in the Youngs Pub to the barreling plant at Watneys
Yep, that’d do it
That’s cool !
I had a very similar boombox. Wouldn’t mind a print of that.
