Absolutely mental crowd sizes at Hamdpen over the years

Attendances in the standing era was nuts, for instance The Kop at Anfield used to easily get 30-odd thousand in, and they used to let lads in at half time for a couple of quid.

It was insane really, rivers of piss cascading down the terraces, and when the crowd moved, you bloody well moved, I always stood pretty much in the same place at the start of a match, I nearly always ended up at least 10 or 20 yards away by the end…

At the time it was great but thinking back it was insane tbh. The scariest time for me was my one and only time in the Jungle at Parkhead during an old firm game - absolutely fucking mental.

I loved standing, I reckon you could do it safely too.

You’ll have to excuse me now if my descriptive powers elude me, due to bank holiday getting pissed up reasons…

Imagine a terraced stand, divided horizontally, on each terrace step by say, 2"6’ wide “U” shaped frames at “leaning on” height, obviously with entry/egress channels every few frames.

So each fan has a space, protected from crowding, but still allowing a measure of freedom to jump up and down without some sanctimonious cunt behind them telling them to sit down.

Isn’t standing being reintroduced at some grounds with a view to bringing back standing sections in all grounds?

It’s already in use in Parkhead Rob and where the Green Brigade reside

I know there has been a lot of interest and visits from supporters clubs in England and Europe but there has been resistance from the FA.

Yeah, that looks great, and, thinking about it, the lack of the u shape in my vision would be better for evacuation etc.

I know Celtic and the GB have had quite a few visits from Liverpool Supporters clubs and specifically invited up some of the Hillsborough families to show them how it works in practice.

It’s understandable there are doubts given what happened at Hillsborough but the difference it has made to the atmosphere at the games is different class. There’s no doubt it would have a huge effect for the atmosphere at Anfield and elsewhere.

Here’s hoping it happens. :+1:

I stopped going to Anfield regularly not long after Hillsborough.

Not because of the standing thing, at least not consciously, but because even though The Kop was a massive area, everyone seemed to have their own regular spot, but after the tragedy, a few of the people who used to be around me, weren’t anymore.

I never knew them other than just being the guys at the match around me who I used to join in a chant with or whatever.

And, other than a couple of them who I recognised from the pictures afterwards, I don’t know what happened to them, other than I suspect they couldn’t face being in a crowd like that again.

Sad days.

For middle class reasons I never really appreciated the rivers of piss on the terraces at Celtic Park. I soon got a season ticket for the old main stand. When I used to follow Celtic away back in the 80’s I was staggered at the disgusting sheds that passed for toilets at some provincial grounds.

To be fair, the fans at Anfield used to be quite considerate in their urinatory habits.

The Saturday edition of the Liverpool Echo used to (possibly still does, can’t remember the last time I bought one) come with a sports (ie footie and gee gees) supplement, printed on pink paper. This was rolled up and used as a handy funnel when relief was required…

Tel me about it, I spent a winter managing these subway units in their dying days, awful
