Beautiful Things

I haven’t; tell us more! :sunglasses:

The affront to a society where >90% believed with absolute certainty in a religious explanation for most aspects of the World they lived in was by a large margin the true shock that Victorian society received. The notion of animal cruelty was barely known (albeit animal rights movements have their roots in that era), indeed the treatment of animals was generally appalling exactly because most religions portray animals as soulless sources of nourishment designed by the ruling deity for mankind’s needs.

Tennyson’s ‘In Memoriam A.H.H.’ perfectly encapsulates the mid-Victorian queasiness at the new ideas then emerging (if you can bear to trudge through so vast an outpouring of turgid grief) - nature is far from idealised, yielding one of his best-known phrases:

" Who trusted God was love indeed
And love Creation’s final law
Tho’ Nature, red in tooth and claw
With ravine, shriek’d against his creed"

Definitely a ‘characterful’ looking animal! :sunglasses:

Only in one area of Southern India so you’re safe :grinning:

Yes. In addition there’s the advantage that the prey would gain. If predation by tigers is a really major factor limiting the deer’s survival to and through breeding/rearing age then there will be a lot of pressure to evolve countermeasures. But if the tigers aren’t really the deer’s worst problem then evolution will favour mutations which allow them, say, to eat younger or older grass instead, or to survive drought for longer, or in the case of the stags to attract and retain more does. Those abilities will improve the chances of them passing on their genes more than being able to distinguish tiger orange from savannah grass green.

Looks like it would require careful cleaning…

In an odd quirk we ended up at the factory that makes these today, unbeknownst. Staggering workmanship, watched a dude create a horse in two colours from a blob of fiery glass in a minute or so.

A similar chandelier hung in their showroom. A cool €2400000. Nearly as much as a mid range Magico :open_mouth:

Crossover between this and the Tools thread… I love his channel, some of the pieces are a bit over the top for me but love his attention to detail and skill!

As a participant on a corrugated iron appreciation group on FB and as fans of old petrol stations Gill & I have decided this place in Llanrug may be Mecca. We need to pay a visit next time we’re in N Wales.

Wonderful decay. Surprising to see vintage pumps and especially signage still in situ,

Went past there today on the way home from the garden centre. It’s a bit more battered by the recent weather. Storm I’ll see you in the spring again Kathleen. Irish sensayuma I guess.

That might be the guy, that built most of his house, from wood, on Grand Designs. Lots of elaborate twisty bits.
