Went to see the Mappa Mundi today. Not beautiful in the conventional sense but very beautiful in as much as one person was trying to convey how the known world was based on reports back from people who’d travelled. When you look closely, everything pretty much is in the correct place relative to the places next to it & the centre is at the Eastern end of the Med. They only knew about 3 of the continents then as well. Europe,(to the left) Asia (to the top) & Africa (to the right).Some of the depictions of creatures described 2nd or 3rd hand are quite amusing & very artfully done.
