Beers in Manchester

Off for an afternoon/evening night out in Central Manchester tomorrow with my brother, plan is beers.

Based on the superb choices from a recent London trip here, any top recommendations for pubs/bars, decent real ale or Belgian is priority.

Our current list is based around the Boddingtons Cask Crawl as a starting point:

My favourite is the Smithfield Market Tavern.

I would say they are generally a good selection of pubs, particularly the 2 Chip Houses.

If it is a warm dry afternoon, I would also suggest you go sit out in Stevenson Square for a while, generally an excellent way to while away some time.

Well it went well, most on the list we visited (Five) were OK I guess, nothing to write home about on the pub or the beer, but Mr Toms Chop House was great, nice and relaxed and had a nice chat with the barman.

Two others we found were smaller bars, also bottle shops. The Beer Moth in particular, superb range of beers on tap as well as huge range of bottles and cans to take away!

For food, shout out to an excellent Greek Resturant (Amazing Kleftiko) and truely superb breakfast the morning after.

This just popped up and by coincidence I’m going to Manchester on Saturday. I completely agree about Ezra and Gil, we stumbled across it a few years ago and now go back every time we’re there.

The breakfast plan (yes, there’s a breakfast plan) is Ezra and Gil on Sunday and the Koffee Pot on Monday.

Matthew Curtis, who wrote the book up thread, reckons it’s his favourite bar in the world (or something).

It’s definitely on The List.
