Carving bodies and necks

With your skills, appropriate if you have cut yourself

Routing and drilling this morning.
The access hole in the neck pickup cavity reappeared in exactly the right place - lucky as I had to work back from the photos because I’d chucked away my scribbled notes.

You might like this video, hope the link works

Sanded it all for a very long time by hand, 120, 180, 240, 320.
Went with natural colour and an high build oil finish.
The figuring in the top looks lovely now, will leave if for a week to harden and then apply some Renaissance wax.

Also finished the neck shaping and final sanding down to 400 grit, super smooth now. Will probably add a very light coat of oil, maybe 2 to make sure it remains that way.

fretwork next…

Few pics of where I’m at.
Finish is done, nut fitted and shaped, truss rod cover made to match the neck.
Next job is wiring and I am not looking forward to that, the lack of access is going to make it very hard work. Will involve pulling parts into position though the holes with cotton thread and soldering directly over the body. I’ll save that for when I’m in the right frame of mind.

Today I finished the wiring, polished the frets, cut the nut, installed strings, set it up and played it!

With the exception of a few minor tweaks (action / neck relief adjustment as it settles) it’s done.
The pickups are humbucker sized P90s.

Quite tricky to photograph as the maple is doing strange things to the camera’s ability to focus.

Anyway here is it,

Despite being a trivial component, I absolutely love the truss rod access cover I made from a neck off cut . Having looked at the pics close up, the nut needs cleaning, will get that done later.

Doubt I’ll blog any others I build in such detail, if at all tbh, but we’ll see.
Going to have a break for a while

Anyway, time for a beer
Cheers
