The first watch reminds me very much of the Traser P66.
It’s fishing in the same pond of trying to conform to past US military specs, so the dial especially is similar. Overall the watch actually has pretty much nothing else in common!
James Murphy had a vintage Rolex on during his LCD Soundsystem Glasto set. It used to be his dad’s.
There is a video on YouTube of it being completely restored and fixed. Good to see it back in real action.
(Wristwatch Revival)
Hmm. Wouldn’replate, because the wear is integral to the watch for me.
I wondered how long a very very cheap watch could last. It’s on strap number three. A good watch for mucking out stables etc.
I get that, I’d probably feel the same, only suggested because you were concerned about the worn lugs. You could have those alone looked at, plus a movement service/sympathetic clean - seems a nice special-occasions watch.
Cheers. It did have a service/clean a few years ago. As you say, a special occasion watch. My dad was an avid vintage motorcyclist, and disliked over restored bikes. He liked a bit of patina. He told me he got the watch from a German soldier during the Second Great Unpleasantness.
That really is lovely!
3 o’clock date is a letdown but otherwise I really like it. Strap an’ orl !
It’s more noticeable in the pics than in reality, FWIW.
I really like that combo - imo speedies look better on almost anything than the boring bracelets they come on. I also really rate Hirsch’s straps - I keep boxes of their springbars handy because even those are far better than most others. A box of 100 is only £9, so I routinely swap-out whatever straps and watches are supplied with.
Popped my Sinn 756 onto a waterproof Hirsch composite leather/FKM rubber strap the other day -
As I’m sure you’re aware, Hirsch are the OEM strap supplier for most of the big Swiss brands.
They’re certainly one of the OEM suppliers for high-end brands, and it’s an area that Germany dominates, with brands like Di Modell, Stailer, Staib, Eulit, Rios, &c - but the French have a presence too - with Camille Fournet, Molequin and ABP, and Italy with ColaReb, Bonnetto Cinturini and Visconti, among many others.
Like everything, the volume stuff is China and Vietnam.
Just good old UK with fuck-all apart from cottage-industry tier.
Who would people recommend for a watch service (Rolex 15200) as mine has not been touched in around 7-years since we bought it.
Service it when it breaks down. Cheaper in the long run. I have watches over 20 years old which have never needed any attention.
If it was serviced before you bought it and it is still working well I would leave it alone.
Even Rolex themselves talk about 10 year service intervals and that depends on actual usage
Thanks guys, I’ll leave it for now then as its been fine timekeeping wise.
Just got my Planet Ocean back from Duncan at Genesis Watchmaking - really excellent service and great comms - not cheap, but worth every penny. Has an excellent reputation far and wide.
While I would agree that ~10 years is probably about right, I would disagree with:
As with cars, so with watches: servicing is cheaper than repairing.
(Unless you’re daft enough to buy a Bentley…)
