Just over a year ago I posted about my Seiko 6139-6002 (Pogue variant) that I’d owned from new (77).
I finally sent my 7A38-706A for service and repair which has just been returned today, also owned from new (84), Another world first being the first analogue quartz chronograph with a day/date complication. The Japanese really showed the Swiss up, a bit like they did with the British car and bike industry in the 70’s.

The Guy has worked wonders and the cost was immaterial as both these watches have shared the vast majority of my life’s story and they both live again, For those interested it was £440. a whole £10 dearer than the Pogue but it did need a lot more parts.
Now thanks to this thread and the enjoyable rabbit hole I now have to consider something I’ve never thought about in my life: rotation.

Picked up this NOS 70s Doxa recently. The movement is a mechanical ETA 2853. By far my smallest watch at 35mm but doesn’t look anywhere near as diminutive as I expected.
That’s a handsome watch!
Rather like the engineering behind this designed for longer term space missions. Which it definitely seems it would be good for other than the fact it has a mechanical movement. Can’t really see NASA putting a watchmaker and workshop on the mars mission. But then I guess no one would buy it if it was quartz with a user changeable power supply.

Lots of cool features:
3D printed metal case in an alloy that is half the weight of titanium but the same strength. Laser quality sapphire glass that blocks UV light, crown works against positive and negative pressure, can adjust time/wind it under water.
The wife has a very funky ring to a similar spec - 3D printed in some sort of aerospace alloy. IIRC the Italian lady who made it does the industrial 3D printing as a day job but has a side hustle in jewellery.

Ooh, I actually really like that. I’m sure it’s way beyond the sort of price I’d consider paying for a watch, but there’s a real elegance to the simplicity of it for me. Almost a sense of Dieter Ramms to it.

An all-ceramic hand-wound movement should take care of the longevity*/servicing angle - while boosting the price to the tune of a couple more zeroes on the end.
*the much increased exposure to harmful radiation should ensure the wearer’s life expectancy and the movement’s life expectancy are bang in the middle of the Venn diagram…
Yes it would be interesting what lasts longer, the watch or the wearer. I still reckon NASA would go battery and user replaceable or just rechargeable if we are talking years and decades.
Or if the America does Apollo 2.0 and goes unlimited budget then probably a small nuclear powered one.
Truth is anything that’s not some form of smartwatch would be no more than a marketing exercise. Which is not to say that such as you posted are anything other than cool AF ![]()
