Interesting, thanks. I think I recall hearing the Wilfa wasn’t great for espresso, as the grind steps weren’t small or fine enough, but as I’m drinking PO, that didn’t trouble me.
If you want to experiment with flat burrs for espresso on a budget* then something like the DF64v
*still quite spendy to anyone but coffee loons
At £600 think I’ll perfect my PO first before dabbling
From your original reply, do I detect you prefer conical burrs generally?
I’ve just bought a spendy flat burr grinder so I hope not (it hasn’t arrived yet).
Flats have a higher possible performance bar for pretty much everything but are generally harder to dial in. Conicals are probably more forgiving but tend to blur flavours in favour of texture - generally because they produce a wider distribution of grind size with more fines.
Fucking hell, I’m now looking at expensive electric grinders!!
Hah - what did you get?
I just saw Option-O are bringing out a Lagom P100 (although internet comments seem to suggest it’s more suited to lighter roasts): Lagom P100 Flat Burr Grinder - estimated early Nov 2023 Dispatch — OPTION-O
I’ve gone for the Zerno. Another good one in that price range is the Lagom P64
That looks neat. How come you went for it over the Lagom?
Well @Penance got the P64 so I fancied something different
I like the aesthetics, it also comes with blind burrs (not sure how much difference that will make but looks neat), has an interesting pre-breaker which is quite new on a grinder like this (again benefits may be undetectable).
Both companies seem great to deal with though. I’d be happy with the P64.
I really like the look of the Weber EG1 - would love that as a piece of equipment on the countertop. But that price…
EG-1 is srs bsns. Everything I’ve read about Weber is they can be cunts to deal with though.
The Kafatek MC5 is another very well regarded titan grinder, although probably not such a looker.
Ah yes, I remember Hoffman rating that the best along with the Weber in his top grinder shoot-out. Think he marginally preferred the Weber as an all-rounder, whereas the Kafatek was more focused on espressos, IIRC.
Verdict; fucking delicious! I might never be a morning person, but this is something to look forward to at silly AM.
It tastes exactly like the description on the label! I’ll be buying more when I finish my 1Kg supply…
I’ll see you back at the delorean
I did wonder about that.
Just realised that if I want to make my own coffee before my thumb heals I’ll probably have to buy an electric grinder
I’ll keep it in mind if I do go for one, thanks.
