I am thoroughly enjoying the meltdown on pfm over the whole issue though, they do love to get offended on other peoples behalf over there.

I approve of his drubbing. As @Valvebloke said, it’s difficult to think of a broadcaster who would be more aware of the chimp connotations given his association with football and footballers.
His ‘apology’ made things worse, if anything.
This will cause Gary Lineker some severe conniptions, given that he’s got an ongoing podcast series with Baker. I can only imagine the hand-wringing going on.

As a very fundamental point, racism does not require intent. It’s purely about end result. Shit that perpetuates racist stereotypes that have been around for a long time make it well nigh impossible to deny intent either.
Sacking was definitely the right move.
As others have observed, the BBC are also being very hypocritical over continuing to give massively out of proportion platforms to Farage et al.
