There is that. We partly went into it as effectively an eco-NFT for virtue signalling purposes.
The early returns look decent, but the lock-in scared the bejesus out of me.
Out of interest, how did the peat you gathered do as a fuel? Have you been to collect more?
It was great as a fuel. Took an age to dry out, not least because we cut it too late and too big, both rookie mistakes.
Once it had dried it burned well and the heat output seemed better than wood but not as good as coal IMO.
Trouble was that it took 14 days (maybe 8 hours per day) of bloody hard work to cut, stack, re-stack, collect and get back to Fetlar, then we still had to get it out of the trailers and stack it again - inside. We both agreed that what we got lasted each of us something similar to a tonne of coal.
1 tonne of coal is (was) around Ā£380 so we were working (very hard) for ~112 hours each, which equates to a saving of around Ā£3/hour when you take ferry costs into accountā¦
We both decided that we had better things to do with our time.
Can you dry out fat american tourists from cruise ships and burn them?
Must be a huge Carbon recovery in that.

Graeme does the math.
I suppose you could but I would imagine they wouldnāt be too happy about it.
I would too.
Do planning rules limit what can be done ? Could a battery realistically tide you over any windless periods ? Are there any DIY aspects which might be able to reduce the capital outlay ? Would the blade movement and/or the noise deter the little flappy chappies (your ātoday in my gardenā pics are fantastic and sacrificing any of that would be a high price to pay).
who gives a fuck once theyāve bought stuff from the craft shop
You do realise that they cause cancer
Not reading the Daily Mail/Express completely protects you from that .
Only if you use it to microwave Pot Noodles.
Depends on the energy needed for blubber rendering.
As long as itās 100m from you nearest neighbour you donāt need planning permission. I could manage that.
Yes, I think a battery would be essential, although we donāt get a lot of windless days!
Hmm, maybe but Iād have to check to see if you need to use a licensed installation co.
Not where I would plan to install it, it would be a fair distance from the willow trees & bush laden parts of the āgardenā (not a garden, just a wild mess)
We own a ground floor flat in a mid terrace block of 4. One below and two above. This week we had someone round to do an EPC. All fairly straightforward except the communal hallway used by our flat and the two above. This hallway doesnāt have any heating which results in our flat and the other two being categorised as end of terrace. Why? Because the door could be left open so the corridor is potentially outside. And the fix? Install a small, cheap, panel heater wired to a fused socket. No need to connect that fused socket to the mains and actually make it functional. The EPC guy says heās not an electrician, he doesnāt have to check it works. Just having it there is enough. Iāll probably do it but would rather just leave a small jar with a bit of candle in it if all thatās needed is a potential heat source. I donāt know what the impact on the rating will be in terms of enhancing the value of the flat not being end terrace; we also have to provide a bit of detail about the construction of an extension added in the 80ās or that bit will also be treated as being of 19C (non cavity wall) construction. I guess weāre just trying to raise its overall rating as much as feasible but the idea of a dummy heater is an odd thing.
Whoever wrote the rules needs slapping. This is not so serious in the short term (in the longer term energy efficiency might save us from the worst of climate change) but itās the sort of regulation stupidity that allowed tower block cladding to be certified as non-flammable by the people whose business interests depended on that being the answer.
This is the trouble with epcs. Itās not a maintenance check. It is changing though, if you need some help guy I can look up your property on the register and have a little play with the options. Most of the modelling will be done. A few photos always helps
Jeezus, is that yours?
What was it previously?
Nope, thatās their current 12m fixed.
Expecting rioting come October. Not joking.
Bloody hell, mine is 26.5770 p/kWh and the SC is 47.6710 p/day (variable tariff)
I expect Iām going to see another huge increase then.
