Most people who seem have problems with internal noise is due to where the water pump is located.
If its in an airing cupboard with hot water cylinder and that’s next to a bedroom, then it’s understandable.
That’s back to what we has 15 - 20 years ago with the old gravity fed CH system - wouldn’t want to go back to that..
For the Daikin heat pump we have, the water pump is in the outside unit and that’s a large double garage away from the house. Can’t hear a thing.
No internal pump.
No noise from an pipes. The hot water cylinder is in the garage. Never heard any noise from it.
Loses less than 1°C. per day in winter there.
The Heat pump compressor and fan when on full are about as quiet / noisy as a regular boiler going!
Yes if you get near it you can hear it but for a detached house it’s no issue at all.
The survey is pretty in-depth - still no obligation on the £200 of course.
Whatever happens don’t let them talk you into a 9 - 16kW heat pump. They don’t modulate down now enough to be economical unless you have a huge pad!
If you have good insulation etc you and decent sized pipes and rads in most places it shouldn’t be too expensive.
Octopus have had a tendency to hugely over estimate the heat lost of properties.
They feared underspecing and folk
saying heat pumps don’t work, I’m cold🙂
They do seem to be getting better on this over the most recent installs I’ve been following though.
Air to water heat pumps cooling would mean pumping cool water around the rads - not very efficient I understand. Air to air is preferable.
I believe there’s a special resistor that needs to be fitted to enable the functionality.
It is an option in our MMI controller under installer settings though!
Generic with air and water heat pumps..
Imagine paying the same as winter bills all summer long! What price comfort i suppose..
I like the summer heat but we are nearish the coast. Cooler than London🥵
We have barely adequate insulation, in a reasonable sized 30 year old house, 21 radiators (predominantly original microbore), 30 year old double glazing etc etc.
Meanwhile we seem to have had a power surge last night that tripped out enough for the battery not to instantly cut in, and also seems to have fried the SolarEdge CT clamp on the inlet to house (useful for stats but not essential) and also possibly the Eddi voltage sensor which means it can’t boost or divert at the moment. Can manually divert but it is slightly inconvenient.
“The Daikin Altherma 3M can connect to a variety of heating and cooling emitters including underfloor heating, low-temperature (newer) radiators and heat pump convectors Ideal for new build homes Heating, cooling and optional hot water are managed from just one outdoor unit.”
I’ve read elsewhere that fancoil emitters as the most efficient for cooling purposes using Air to Water or Ground Source to Water Heat Pumps though.
As they move air around they get the cold out more effectively in to the rooms so you feel it more.
Added: 4. Cooling. For underfloor heating the cooling effect is not as strong as traditional air conditioning, but it is possible to reduce room temperatures with 3-5°c.
I believe there is a £1k tax-free limit on excess generation income (I guess per year), although quite how that works if you are using any of the monthly income to offset your electricity/gas usage/cost through the year I’m not sure.
On our octopus account, we have been just letting the ‘income’ sit in on the account as it increased in the summer and then gets chipped away and into debit over the winter, and back towards the black by the end of spring (such as now).
They sort of already do tax it, in a roundabout way. Given that energy firms are not allowed to offset any exported energy against consumption - the energy consumed plus daily standing charge are subject to 20% VAT. The exported energy is listed separately, with no VAT refunded - is that not an effective 20% tax?
We did the same last winter - with the monthly debit set at £50, by the end of last October, we had built up a £650 credit. But at the end of March, we were still £270 in credit, so I reduced the monthly DD to £25.
If we can get through to next March on £25 a month, we’ll be laughing!
