Depends if old style ones have different maintenance requirements to modern pre engaged types.
You have just triggered the trauma of what shape I had to make with my fingers to try and get to the starter on my old 1500 Midget when I swapped it out. That definitely wasn’t designed for easy access…
Must get my checked at the upcoming mot as not sure when it was last done.
Had one fail around a decade or so ago
Even for the make and year of the car there were 4 different starter motor options, mine has auto engine stop start for when you are in traffic etc, If you go into neutral the engine stops and then starts again when you depress the clutch, That means a bigger battery and i am sure hs implications to the starter motor.
