Holidays

I was there a year and half on and off

Block of low level flats (2 or 3 stories) that were due to be redeveloped and Vout and a few mates dug down below to make the small ‘club’

Hatch in the floor with a ladder to the after party venue.

Did you know Kev, Matt & Keith who did the squat parties?

I never went to that place I think, went to a few of the parties in that ex mental asylum in lisse and droogdok

When you get down to Rome be sure to leave time to visit the Via Appia Antica and in particular the Parc of the Aqueducts. You can hire electric mountain bikes for the day.

Book early for the mountain bikes , we ended up with normal bikes and I’m sure you’ve read my tale of punctures and trying to find the aqueduct

TBF this was end of June I’m sure it’s easier now

They were a fair way into the park. We got to the nearest one but then had to head back to the hire shop as we had a train to catch. Need to allow a full day for it.

We found but the wrong end, off piste hence where the punctures started and yes we only had an afternoon a full day is needed, we nearly missed our flight

Do you mean the Pesthuis in Leiden?

Yes sorry Leiden , that’s the gaff, I remember it being a fucking long bike ride,
It was a moody place as I remember full of proper loons

Nice in the summer though.

I lived in Leiden but worked in Lisse. In the winter I would arrive at work on my broomer with frozen clothes.

Did you ever go to the parties on that squat in hillegom

5 days in Litton near Buxton in the Peak District. Lovely village, brilliant pub, friendly locals and great cottage.

No idea about views etc until the fucking rain stops.

Thanks for the advice, but unfortunately Rome and Sicilly will be waiting until April next year. All the sites for caravans shut in November, so although we could get to Sicily, as it stays open for the Italians, the trip back would be a mare. The plan is now to head to half way up Portugal via Madrid, onto Porto and spend a week or so exploring the Douro Valley. Back into Spain for the Picos de Europa national park, then up the French Atlantic Coast.

So it begins, a visit to s couple of caves NE of Avignon. The idea being to buy some lesser know wines, lesser known in the UK that is, as we travel around. First up was Castelas, a cooperative maker owned by 45 growers, Cotes du Rhone and Cotes du Rhone Superior appellations.

Mainly Syrah/Grenach and half a case heading to blighty.

Then onto Lirac and Vignerons de Tavel for another half case and a couple to drink at the weekend.

Revel, near Tolouse is next up..

Lovely

A small terracota plaque , almost hidden and forgotten on the Coll d’Ares ( French/Spanish border crossing on a Pyranees high pass). In Catalan but translates as ,

“In memory of all the men and women who in times of defiance took bold steps on the path of freedom.”

Not sure if this refers to the Civil war and WW2 , but poignant all the same.

Perhaps someone could translate this 2002 Spanish monument, more obvious prominence on the other other side of the road.

This building is the old Border crossing, now unused…

According to a plaque in the nearby village of Mollo, following the Republican defeat in Barcelona over a 100,000 civilians, 3000 wounded, were allowed over the mountain pass by the Franco army. However, Nationalist soldiers were executed by firing squad and there are many mass and unmarked graves in the area.
