Horn/Slot Tweeters

Probably been discussed a lot on here, but I’m new to both AA and the world of DIY horns and I’m also rubbish at searching, so here’s a new thread.

I’m on the lookout for a pair of horn tweeters/super tweeters for my new Altecs, so have been looking at what’s around. They’ll be coupled to GPA 288 CDs on multi-cell horns, which are 109dB, so I’ll ideally want something with 100dB+ efficiency so I’m not padding the horns down too much.

Crossover will be around 6kHz or 7Khz so more of a super tweeter really.

Has anyone on here ever taken a risk on some of the great looking kit that the host of Japanese sellers has advertised on ebay? Some great looking JBL, Fostex, Coral etc tweeters on there, but whenever I’ve messaged a seller, they just ignore you.

Any other suggestions gratefully received.

Cheers

Just to add that I have heard Fostex T825s briefly in this setup and they were pretty magical to my ears. Never see them for sale in the UK though, or any of the other Fostex tweeters (T900A, T925A) for that matter (second hand at least - appreciate Hifi Collective seem to stock most of the current Fostex range).

A pair of Coral H-104s on ebay that are really tickling my fancy. From Japan though obviously.

@thebiglebowski may still have some JBL 2405s available. Can’t recall if he sold them.

Faital Pro HF10AK sound very good crossed over that high, coupled to a small 3D printed waveguide/horn, would be pretty small for 7-8kHz crossover.

At the very budget end, I was very impressed with the Sica HFU 6x8 when crossed over that high, as part of my 3-way diy project.

As luck would have it, there’s a pair of those very Faitals (with matching horns) currently on eBay. Seem like a no-brainer at the price, but my heart tells me the more vintage tweeters are going to sound more appealing!?

Depends what you’re aiming for. Thing I always come back to is that I only have to satisfy one pair of ears and those are my own.

If you like the Fostex that Chris has then that’s probably a good place to start, if you can’t find an identical pair then 925s would be easier to source (slightly different character iirc).

I don’t know with vintage tweeters, not used any to have an informed opinion.

A 1" compression driver is more for the next frequency down - I use mine (JBL 2461) from 3-8k, and use the 2405s above. I don’t know those Faitals, but the default would be to use them lower and shove one of their bullet tweeters above.

That said, they might sound great, I don’t know them. Those YLs though

I’ve read some of the reviews for that Japanese seller selling the YLs on eBay. Might get lucky, but plenty of risk for a big headache. Such a shame because there is so much great stuff on eBay from Japan.
