According to our vet, it’s very common for mogs fed on mainly wet food to develop excessive tartar with the consequential tooth/gum problems.
When Monty had his last annual check-up, the vet said his teeth were in super condition (hence the conversation above) we reckon this is because he loves Maine Coon kibble. The pieces are big - about 12mm cubes which he cannot swallow without crunching.
