Also had the worst air quality in the world that day . Combination of smog and wildfire smoke. The sky was orange. Yeah Toronto
So, an update;
ALL the Rehoming/Rescue charities are full (loads of older cats, plus it’s kitten season).
It’s unlikely that the local centre will allow Squeaky to become a stray but, none are showing any enthusiasm for handling him.
We have spread our net quite wide, but have come up with zilch.
We have been stressed enough with having to give up our boy, but this has just added to it.
Until two days ago.
We have stated our plight on various WhatsApp groups in the local area, and spoken to people in the village. Many offers have been received - none of them practical (he’ll be in the same village without access to his home of 12 years, well wishers have dogs, or are unable to house him safely).
However, one offer was received from a former client of Narelle’s. She and her husband have a farm 6 miles from here. Her M-i-L (who lives in a separate cottage on the farm) is 85+ and is looking for an elderly cat for companionship. We’d love him to live with them but, the sister is being difficult because she owns a dog that doesn’t like cats and is a frequent visitor.
We are hoping that the hurdles can be ironed out, as the place sounds perfect for him.
Watch this space…
Fingers crossed Bruv…
Well, FUCK !
That’s fallen through due to a difficult family member.
We still have a couple of less than perfect options but we are hopeful for a reasonable outcome. While these options have flaws, the people involved already know Squeaky (and vis versa)
So that’s a decent starting point.

So, enough is enough !
The stress is appalling !
We have given in and arranged for a rehoming locally. We know the household, Squeaky has been a regular visitor to their house, they love cats, they are lovely people. They also understand the situation as they have re-homed animals previously.
Squeaky will remain listed with the Rehoming Charities (agreed by all parties) but, with the unlikelihood of the charities’ space becoming available before we leave, it’ll be up to the new owners to decide. FTR…they will keep him.
This takes a load of stress off us. Plus the bonus of keeping him until we fly out.
I asked Squeaky’s opinion and this was his response…
I’m done.
One of the reasons that we didn’t want to re-home locally was the risk of Squeaky returning to the cottage only to find us no longer there, finding somebody who may not like cats, and panicking, stressing, being confused, etc..
After giving up on the charities, I received a call this morning from Oxfordshire Pet Sanctuary, saying that they have a place for him.
Quick conversation with the neighbour who offered to take him, and shedding a bucket load of tears, we decided that a clean break was needed. So the Sanctuary it is.
The horrific downside ?
He has to go in tomorrow morning.
So, it’s a case of ripping off the bandage.
Our 94 year old neighbour (who feeds him when we are away) just came around and spent 15 minutes with him and left in tears.
As for us ? Relief but immense sadness, and guilt.
We are both a dribbling mess.
Tomorrow is going to be an even tougher day.
Saga over.
Absolutely fucking heartbroken ![]()
Hold on to that. You loved him dearly. He will be loved again.
Big hugs chief, I cannot imagine how you’re feeling right now.
Just for context: Monty has a very sweet tooth and particularly loves ice-cream. So when our friend came over with her little lad eating a Cornetto, Monty sat at his feet, looking up and began slobbering like a dog until the second line of the song “give it to me” was fulfilled.![]()
Dairy items are the only human food Bobbi shows any interest in. Yogurt, milk, and cheese (in that order)
She goes absolutely mental if she sees yogurt especially ![]()
