Is "burn-in" (of electronics) a thing?

A lot of them are, but there can be changes early in the life of valves (essentially the chemistry of the cathode coating ‘settling down’) and that thing with inductor magnetisation might happen early too. I guess I was just making the point that components aren’t as stable at any point as we might like to think.

ISTR someone saying that the stability of semiconductors was a selling point for them when they first appeared on the scene.

If something can wear in how does it know when to stop at optimal before simply starting it;s journey to wearing out - I think is the argument - The whole thing with caps seems to be about the cathode which I’ve heard a few times. I do agree manufacturers should deliver items that are optimised by not doing so the burn in time can lead to doubt and or normalization (people / egos who have forked out want to like what they have bought and dislike being seen as foolish or a mug so justify / rationalize instead)

Amazing how they only improve over time.

All are welcome to visit my workshop - it is perfumed with the secent of burn out. Some of the electrics stink too.

I’m not talking about degradation of years old kit Matt. It’s just astonishingly convenient how sound only goes one way after a month or two

Isn’t it just.

The old joke was that “burn in” takes just slightly longer than the dealers return/exchange period

Classic case of the difference between what you perceive is happening versus what is actually happening.

Then of course there are the cable suppliers who will burn the cables in for you; at an extra cost of course

Colour me shocked

Do cables need burning in?

Only expensive ones, their nano crystaline lattices are all a bit delicate and need their quantums aligned properly.

Synergistic molecular alignment, innit? As any fule kno.

I love that, all I read from that is that you spend £20k on a cable but the supplier themselves think has poor sound unless you pay more to save time.

If I’m paying £20k on a few bits of wire they better be bloody perfect from the moment I get them.

My first post on the Wam was about this, and I got absolutely shat upon.

How times have changed :winking_face_with_tongue:

But Sir, you plan to have 4 way speakers so that will be £80K please + associated treatment bollocks😂

And yet…

A thread on the subject is a rarity, there are probably more threads on here on different ways to boil an egg

The Termi Plus is an original version, and the recent heirarchy ‘upgrades’ from Dena mean that the now Venus 15th actually IS the Termi +, at about half the cost. Same with my, just got yesterday, Pontus 15th (which IS running in - some say Denafrips DACs can take Months to fully run in), which is actually last years Venus II 12th. I bought it directly from Denafrips in China, and it arrived in 12 days from the order, although there was a ‘Workers Holiiday’ in the meantime, so shipping got delayed a cupla days. But, I paid c22% less than if I’d bought from the UK importer/distributor, who refused to budge a penny from his retail pricing, so he lost the sale. All shipping/VAT/duties paid by Denafrips, so I believe I got a bargain.
