Here’s my report on Notre Dame Music Bar, a fairly new spot in Paris. It’s explicitly modeled on the kissa—the JBL speakers, McIntosh amps, even some of the books and magazines on shelves could have come from a venerable Japanese bar or cafe. (I took a photo of the gear list from the menu—more details there.) I talked to one of the owners and asked about the issue of chatty patrons. He shrugged, and said, “It’s France, what can you do?” I’ve heard similar things from bar owners here and in other countries. It’s interesting to see the blend of Japanese and French elements. The gear, records, and whisky and gin are straight out of the kissa playbook, but the sidewalk patio, the cocktails, and the substantial wine collection are definitely French. While I was there I listened to the whole of Gil Scott Heron’s 1971 album, Pieces of a Man. The cocktails were very tasty. Overall, it was a great experience. Highly recommended.

Be nice to see some without Macintosh someday

In what is actually a very interesting series, Portillo visits a Tokyo Kissa in episode 12 of his Japanese Railway tour. Go to 21:21 to get there directly.

That series hadn’t been on my radar until yesterday when I accidentally discovered it, it’s well worth a watch :+1:

Not a kissa, but seems this is an ongoing thing in Prestwick.

From FB:

Just had an incredible listening experience inside the decayed grandeur of the Broadway cinema in Prestwick. Space Scores for May 4th played at serious levels over a retro JBL cinema system. It sounded AMAZING! The kick from the subs was unbelievable! There was even a classic Altec A7 speaker in the foyer. Apparently these listening sessions are going to happen regularly, which is fantastic as they’re not common in Scotland. Highly recommended hi fi experience at Friends of the Broadway Prestwick

No visible pilfered merch in that bottom pic. He really needs to up his game.

Indeed, 2/10
