Stellarium is great, you can get an app for mobile devices too, but it costs a couple of quid and is the only app I can recall paying for.

It’s the first thing ever to make me consider supplementing the 25YO candybar Nokia with a modern Twatphone. I just wish I wasn’t so learning-immune now, 'cos I never learned most of the major stars and constellations, and struggle to assimilate them now.
It’s really good mate, especially given the times you walk the hounds, you’d enjoy it.
That exact thought has occurred to me - for mainland UK, the light pollution is pretty low, so clear nights are pretty ace. Usually check stuff out on the lappy when I get home.
