NAS, backing up data etc

Sorry just saw “external”

Some things to try here.

Thanks Mick, the rapid pressing of ‘esc’ has brought this up. What now? :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

If you create a Windows recovery drive that you should be able to wipe it. You’ll obviously need a working PC for this though, do you have one?

The recovery drive can be a CD (assuming the laptop has a CD reader), an SD card or a USB drive. TBH it’s a useful thing to have, you just need a working copy of Windows 10 to create one.

If it’s less than a month old, get it sent back. it’ll get the hdd reinstalled or replaced when it’s ‘refurbished’. If you start trying to fix it they may say you broke it.

If you’re only worried about browser saved passwords etc then you can change them when you get the new pc. Any payment details are encrypted or stored by the shop on their machines, not on yours

Presumably there is a password for starting Windows?

If it’s that broke I’d expect they’ll just re-image the disc or potentially just bin the hdd as soon as it fails startup.

When this stuff happens the correct response is the screen cock punch warm up.

Press No to this. Now press Fn + F3 to reset to default. Then save, exit and reboot.
You might need to press Fn + F4 to get back to the save screen.

a fix seems to be moving the hard disk to another sata port, that’s assuming the laptop can be undone to move the cable.

What make/model of laptop is it?

If amazon are happy to replace you can boot from this USB image and if it can detect the hard disk you can wipe before sending back…

why reset the BIOS - it might have setting that pertain to the laptop…

It looks like it is stuck in EFO interface rather than Windows interface. It’s only a month old so I assume it will have a standard build so default would be safe.

Have a look at link in post 82 which I found to see if I’ve misunderstood.

Thanks for all your efforts and advice, I have returned the bag of shit

There seems to be multiple NAS threads so I’ve picked this one at random.

I’ve been toying with getting a NAS for a while but an unexpected tax rebate may have given me the impetus to take the plunge. I currently have about 300 GB of music stored on an ancient laptop which inevitably will go bang unexpectedly (it’s backed up on a couple of portable hard drives)
I use LMS to feed a couple of SBT’s but am also considering getting a Wiim Ultra streamer so compatibility with that is desirable.
Black Friday has brought the following to my attention:

Will this fit the bill? There is unlikely to be a requirement for a huge amount of storage, just the music and a reasonable number of photos etc. It will also need to be user friendly enough for someone with the IT knowledge of the average 10 year old to set up and use. I assume that a 2 bay NAS can be used with a single drive with the option of adding another in the future?

Any advice/opinions or suitable alternatives welcomed. I’m ideally looking to spend about the same as the 2 items above.

tldr etc

Cheers.

Q. Why do you need two bays?

Personally I’d go with a more established brand, Qnap, Synology etc.

The Seagate is a commodity, all good :+1:

I don’t really think that I do need 2 bays, it was the price that did it :slightly_smiling_face:

Just seen this, better?

I bought one of these a couple of weeks ago and have stuck with the brand for ~15 years.

Others will be able to advise on single bay offerings from other manufacturers.

I have had a previous generation of that Synology (DS118) which has been trouble free for a number of years.
I haven’t got a WIM Ultra but do have the WIM Pro, assuming it has the same software, It just found all the music I had really simply. If it is on the network it will find it.

I’d have assumed that was so you can set it up with a RAID array in case one of the drives fails
