Speakers (at the moment) will be either Goodmans 201s (ex Hoops) or Triangle Antals. I’ll wait to see how they sound before heading down the rabbit hole

Audiophile gripper rods if you are having carpet

Windows will be behind me (as will the door) plus two Velux in one part of the roof. Side windows will be covered as there is no light from one side and t’other side just looks at the road

I’ve transferred (clumsily) my shit to here to avoid crapping on this thread

Definitely having carpet and a big rug. Would it be best to install the gripper rodsbefore or after the carpet has been laid? And should I allow extra funds for cable lifters? Also, which way should I hoover the carpet? - From speaker to listening position or vice versa?

We had to soundproof a couple of flats years ago and used this stuff, and soundboard plasterboard

How effective was it Stu?

I’m looking into doing the wall that joins my neighbour’s side.

Insulation, insulation and more insulation.

Velux go for the electric or solar.

Great sized room :+1:

We went totally over the top in the flat above and below, also using special mastic around every join of the board and with a suspended 2nd ceiling.Above we cut strips of soundboard that fitted inbetween the joists, then mixed up one coat plaster to put around the edges,

The bloke who tested it for noise said it was the lowest result he had seen.
It wasn’t intended to be so good, but the bloke we worked for was worried it would fail

Guessing @J_B would know much more about soundproffing

Graham (GJO) on the WAM soundproofed his room, I think he did the party wall to the neighbour.
It worked very well. Might be worth asking him what he did.

Wish somebody would soundproof him.

On a serious note for a moment, if you are considering anything like this please talk to a proper mains supply sparky first. Depending on how your incoming supply earth is provided you could, in the event of a fault, end up sinking transient currents from your whole village. There’s a safety warning on the Russ Andrews site which says you have to install their intervening box which ensures that over all the important parts of the frequency spectrum the earthing rod is prevented from doing anything.

VBN

why bother with them. Just brick them up

Dig up the floor and bury bass horns. The rest will fall into place easily from there.

Fuck! If only I’d thought about that before buying the house!

Just looking at the Russ Andrew’s stuff - is it all bollocks or is there any truth in ANY of it? I’m thinking wiring and plug sockets here.

No! Out of that rabbit hole quick!

Do everything you can to properly soundproof the build.
Stu has the right idea. Seal all air gaps with good mastic, use very dense insulation, try to isolate the internal walls from the external walls.
Think about the room heating; what to use, and how. All these things need to be sorted during the refurb.
All the acoustic room tuning can come later, but if you don’t soundproof and seal the room as much as possible, you will regret it.
You can build all sorts of room traps and acoustic panels later.
