Never have i seen a stronger need for Pornhub
Thinking on it, the speakers were quite remarkable in how clearly they portrayed the differences between the amps and sources. They could sound clear and incisive or fuzzy and gorgeous, depending on amp. The thing is, they always sounded fantastic.
I think that Jim might have a surprisingly long and complicated journey ahead, finding out what he prefers. But there’s no downside, I imagine they would sound amazing with a £50 class D throwaway amp tbh.
Full respect @coco i absolutely hate working with an audience
I am quite good at just switching off and focusing. But definteky prefer not to have an audience!
(To be fair some of the help was welcome)
What needed doing to Kev’s amps?
Everything ![]()
Filament supply on one of the 46’s had carked it before Christmas. I’d patched it up with a new transistor but the board was damaged so I brought a replacement that I’d (mostly) built up in the meantime.
Then the amp wouldn’t work, and after fixing a broken wire it still didn’t work, seemed to be losing bias and one of the tubes was running away. Checking everything seemed fine and in the end turned out to be a tube socket issue, tightening the pins fixed it.
Step away from the soldering iron and get pissed ![]()
Not an option at the moment! ![]()

Hardly any booze was consumed, we’re all getting too old!
That’s what I said ![]()
Thanks for all your efforts Pete.
For a moment there I was thinking about new 300B ![]()

Yeah, that was worrying.
Huge thanks to Jim and Ann for hosting, it was really nice to see everyone, it’s certainly been a while since I’ve seen many folks.
The Gotos are lovely, but then I’ve heard them before, and even played with some of the drivers in the past so knew they should be great. it was very interesting hearing different amps, from the First Watt stuff, to single ended and push-pull 300B amps, with the different preamps (M7 & Vida) feeding them. The sound was consistently excellent with preferences being more a matter of taste and balance.
Huge thanks to Jim and Ann. As always great hospitality and food. The new bungalow and music room are lovely.
Goto’s are BIG, and excellent.
Nice to see everyone. It was a very good day!
Just home. Thanks Ann and Jim. Nice to see everybody.
Loved the speakers. Not so much some of the music played tbh.
Liked 300b amps. Pass amps were very good though.
Had a lovely time. Feeling quite emotional.
