He made his England debut at fly half last week and played again today.
He got substituted in the second half to be told he had just been called up for the British & Irish Lions as injury cover for Finn Russel.
As far as mangled analogies go this is real Roy of the Rovers stuff
A good selection overall. not liking Hogg at fullback, but I see his advantages. Lawes at 6 is for the lineout options and his âfear factorâ of the crunching tackles.
Daly at 13 is a big call, as lately his tackling has been poor and with Van Der Merve outside him, both poor at defense.
I donât agree with Farrell as back-up 10, if he comes on he will lose the lions the match. Smith would play with no fear and be much more lively and unpredictable. TBH I am sick of Farrell missing good attacking opportunites and just kicking the ball.
The real weakness in the Lions squad is at 9, if the starting 9 gets injured we are fecked.
Agree with you about Hogg. I would have him on the bench and put Williams on to start. Van de Merve is a brave call because, as you say, he has defensive frailties. I like Daly at 13 though. Smith on the bench for me too. With the game opening up, bringing on Smith and Hogg could be a potent move. Scrum half is a worry but maybe Price will rise to the occasion?
Front five and pack replacements look good. Back row was always the trickiest selection for me. So many quality players, who do you leave out?
Lawes, Itoje and AWJ were immense.
Watson was lucky not to get at least a yellow for the tip tackle just after coming on.
VdM, Watson (the one who started) and Henshaw were the pick of the backs.
Will have to do it all again next week!
Have been enjoying the Olympics 7âs. Still a brutal game but great to watch. Pleased for Fiji to win it again. Deservedly too as they were easily the best team & comfortably outplayed NZ in the final. Emotional too with many crying during the pre match anthems as well as at the end!
Hard attritional Rugby.
The Lions advantage in the line out with du Toit out might prove decisive in the end.
But I donât think SA will be kicking to touch.
It feels like the top coaches are so terrified to lose they wonât risk anything to try and win. Gatlandâs time at Wales wasnât marked by score fests, it was all impenetrable defence. Rugby rule makers really need to find a way to open up defences and make scoring the way to win.
