Shows that the reality is that Australia have been punching above their weight for years given their playing base for Rugby Union.
A long way behind Aussie Rules and Rugby League, and these days probably soccer as well.

Yep. The total population base for Rugby currently is approx. 13.5 million (Based on the two states who play the game).
Well below the numbers playing AFL, and League. Soccer has always been an ‘also ran’, along with basketball.

Australia has a population of approx. 28 million. Cricket is played in every state and territory.
It’s THE Summer sport.
Proportionally, there is less competition but there is still alternate sports.
In Winter, the competition for priority is huge.
Straya is a ‘Sporting Nation’ but spread thinly over several codes.
For Australian sports teams to be as competitive as they have been over many years is yes, very much performing above what would be reasonably expected.
