Shiny brand new second hand things in my system today V1.2 (Part 1)

I’m probably already too late, but throw the lead-free solder in the bin and get yourself some full-fat lead solder: it’s significantly easier to work with, and you as a private individual are not obliged to use lead-free.

Thanks. Not all that easy to find though (not on Amazon anyway). I’ll keep looking.

In the bottom of the box containing the old (broken) soldering iron, I’ve discovered a reel of oldschool lead solder. Estimated age 15-20 years. Worth a try, or bin it?

Should be fine, assuming it has flux core for electrical work

Ah, it simply says 5 core 60/40 tin lead.

Should be good then

I have been using old stock of my dads thirty years old stuff tis fane

Am I going to need flux?

No, the 5 cores will be flux. Sounds like Ersin Multicore, good stuff

Yes, that’s what it is.

Probably easiest to pre-tin each then join.
Heat the wire end and put a small amount of solder on it, do the same for the pin in the plug then heat the plug pin and bring the tinned wire to it.
Practise a bit with some old bits first

Thanks.

Interesting twist: I’m currently at my mother-in-law’s for my nephews birthday party. It transpires that my (potential) future brother-in-law is a dab hand at soldering. When I asked how he acquired this skill, he revealed that he used to build turntables for Pink Triangle.

I think we’re going to get on just fine. An interesting evening ahead…

Cool, but where did he become a dab hand at soldering though?

I’ve just asked him, as I assumed from building the turntables.

No, the soldering came from his work as a tattoo artist.

No, I don’t get it either, so I’ll ask…

Never talk too long to a tattooist - You will get a Tattoo

OK, so apparently each Pink Triangle turntable was built from scratch by one person, and the soldering came at the motor/pcb stage. The tattooing connection has something to do with setting up needles, but we’re both a bit pissed now.

I’m now trying to keep up with a description of the PT inverted ruby bearing…

Oh, and apparently PT was a very ‘imteresting’ company to work for…

That’s a J D Vance wet dream in ink.

Nope, no chance.

Never.

Adamant commitment is the first lapse warning sign. A tat is already in the post here…
