Isn’t that the brand new price ![]()
Pretty much although I gather there is a multi year waiting list for a new one from Decware.
Cheers Rob, still very much enjoying it.
Also, very interesting comparing it with the Bottlehead 2A3 monos I bought recently from Adam.
Both easily have sufficient power to make 6 x Goto compression drivers sing. The Zen has a very slightly more etched (but never harsh) top end with better detail, whereas the Bottleheads are less resolved, but smoother and more liquid.
I’ve had this in my system for a couple of weeks now: iFi Valkyrie DSD. It’s a little (carbon record brush for scale) headphone amp/ DAC. It’s supposed to be portable but isn’t really, without a bag anyway. But I read a review that said it would work well in a normal system. I got it on here from Mr Fun’s clearance lines. It’s an excellent device. Very sophisticated. Will up-sample and has a NOS setting which is how I’m using it. Battery powered, but comes with a quality, quiet power supply too. So with the Wiim Ultra and this I have very good digital now. It has a lovely natural sound with no lack of detail. Very pleased.
Neat Petite Classic
Got these rather than the Elite Classic based on @Tons_of_fun review so if they are rubbish I’m going to troll him on AVForums for the next 10yrs ![]()
They are only a few weeks old but straight out the box they are really impressive.
The stands were only £99 new and actually good for the price (I was expecting them to be pretty shonky)
You’ll have to get in line with everyone else.
I adore them though and I still think they’re the best speaker you can buy at the price.
First thing I notice is I think the bass is faster and more solid than the Elites which is weird given their much smaller size.
Then again I was really impressed with the matchbox Iota Alphas
That’s because they’ll have less of it. Less bass = “faster”. Ask Naim ![]()
Weirdly there’s not much in it. The Petite uses THESE (I think) while the Elite uses the R3 they’ve used for donkey’s years. At most, in my room there was about 4Hz in it at the -3dB increment.
4Hz at 20-50Hz is quite significant. Like a couple of kHz missing at HF.
I’m not fussy about low bass extension, probably why I liked the tone scouts without a sub ![]()
If it is 4Hz less it does sound better than the Elites for it.
Those stands will look great once there are some teeth marks on them.
It’s more that it’s a common subjective effect - less bass will sound “faster”.
Isn’t there a danger that the dog will gobble these up once your back’s turned?
Ah no he’s distracted at the moment by chewing the doorframes, I’m sure they’ll be somewhere on his tochew list though ![]()
So I know you all hate them, but that’s fine, you can fuck off ![]()
But I got a new pair of “coffins”.
I’ve been after a pair for a while and an opportunity came right up from a local dealer that I couldn’t refuse. Right model, right finish, right stands and right price.
Welcome back to Harbeth SHL5+
This time in 40th anniversary guise!
No, they’re not wired wrong, the crossover is because my DAC and amps use different balanced connection standards!
it’s not so much I hate them as they hate music ![]()
I massively disagree in every possible way. I rarely feel more connected to the music than I do with these.
Congrats you should definitely sleep better owning a pair of those
