Which deck & cartridge?
Well a spring on top of a spring might not be the best idea but a Basis Debut Gold Standard and IO.
I did read a comment from you somewhere that said with care it could maybe be used with a suspended deck, so Iām going to try it.
In my mind it could be a great match to the IO and Iāll just have to try to keep it level.
It can work on a suspended deck & the Basis should be more stable & easy to set level than most. Be interested to hear how you get on. It was possible to get extraordinary bass out of this type of arm.
Still getting everything together. Step-up transformers are being delivered tomorrow and I will need to figure out how to sort that out and get them in a nicely shielded case. Iāve been told they need 3 layers of shielding but I could only afford to have them send them in a standard single layer. I also still need to get the IO fixed/rebuilt.
Youāll need to get your stylus tracking force gauge as close as possible to the exact height the surface of the record will be at
I can see much frustration ahead.
Itās not that bad!
Are you going to get Neil at ANUK to do the rebuild?
Iām a total novice. Iāve just been accumulating bits and itās getting close to figuring it out time now.
Going to Audio Note is probably the best option, though the cantilever may just be bent. You actually looked this IO over years back at HiFi Hangar lol
If anyone was going to rebuild it, theyād replace the cantilever assembly anyway.
I would recommend Neil if the price isnāt too much. He has all the right parts and the experience of doing them.
I had a quote from them a while back and though itāll no doubt have went up a bit now I think itāll still be a reasonable price.
Not that itāll matter to him but is it originally a Japan made cartridge?
Yeah.
They said they rebuild using diamond theyād put on their IO 2. Something to that effect.
Thatās a better tip than the ones used on current JP made cartridges. ANUK still buy in (from Japan) the titanium cantilevers with those nice diamonds fitted as an assembly. They wind silver coils on the former at the end of the cantilever & then will mount that with neoprene damper into the body & magnetics youāve supplied.
Sold.
Neil doesnāt work for AN anymore, hasnāt done so for the best part of two years or so. As far as I know he works in a car body shop nowā¦
Thereās me bang up to date! Whoās doing the cartridges now?
Tell him to get his arse back then.
I think they now have someone doing the Tx winding (which Neil also used to do) and someone doing the cartridges. Donāt know names Iām afraid.
Was Neil the guy with the gargantuan dogs?
