Well I’m not alone in loving a bbc monitor style approach. I’d still like to hear some Graham 5/8’s at some stage. But suspect these will last me a very long time

I’ve had more than a few BBC school speakers and still find that sound and choice of compromises to be very easy to live with long term.

One thing I do give them, is that outside of a panel speaker, they give the most ā€œout of boxā€ presentation of any box speaker I’ve heard. Every time I go back to a traditional ā€œthick walledā€ coffin, all I can hear is the box and the sense of containment. I love how breathy, light and free the Harbeths sound. Yet they’re also happy to play loud techno all night long.

I’ve listened to music through two basic types of BBC 'speaker. The LS3 amd LS5.

Spoken voice and ā€˜near field’ type shit- nice.

The LS 5 (Rogers) were at a party and distorted really badly with the music they were tasked with reproducing.

I mean all fairly small and antiquated by today’s standards I think. I had a set of ls3/5a’s for a while and found them utterly hopeless for anything more challenging than the most sparse acoustic.

The SHL5’s have an 8ā€ driver and will go plenty loud with good heft and impact, although I do use a sub to fill in the 25-35hz range

I don’t quite get the hate that Harbeths seem to attract on here. I don’t think I’m ever likely to buy myself a pair, but the few pairs I’ve listened to over the years have all been absolutely fine, and I can think of a number of manufacturers (B&W, Focal, Naim, and Kharma all immediately spring to mind) that I’d far rather not have than Harbeths.

(I don’t mind them either tbh although not once has one ever been the best thing I’ve heard at the money)

Had a bit of a change around, out going the KEF Threes, ATC CA2 and Belles Soloist 1 to consolidate what I had in prep for the DIY Active project.

I’ve been looking for a Quad Artera Play for a couple of months and finding one in the black finish and at a good price. The Yamaha is connected for Spotify but will be replaced with a straight streamer once I’ve decided on one.

Ever trusty ATC SCM10s back in being pushed along with @AmDismal Bridged Rotel RB-976 MK2, with the 6-channels going to be used in the Active project once I make some progress…

General question, I was thinking how I never see Kef mentioned, amongst established British speaker manufacturers. Is that because they’re not good (though by all accounts B&W/Naim speakers also aren’t good but I still see them mentioned in a negative context - Kef seem to be a non-entity on hifi fora)?

I really like KEF Reference, having had a couple of pairs of the Reference Threes (90s model), 104/2 and the 201/2.
I find they do everything pretty well so an all-round good compromise I think. Sort of a speaker that does the least wrong.

Thanks. Funny how you were typing your post above re Kef as I was typing mine. Didn’t see it until I’d posted. Synchronicity In Action.

P.S. I am intrigued to hear the Blades - they look cool.

I heard them when I was working in a hifi shop when the 1st version was launched, sounded great but then they should at the £10k?? price they were back then.
I see the current models start at Ā£23k, I think if I was spending that money I’d probably be looking elsewhere.

Just a gentle refresh of the above? Does anyone else have one of these clones still that they may sell?

I’ve been using an Artera Play+ for the last 5 years and really rate it highly. I’m glad it’s working for you.

With thanks to @malbec

It works, although I think lubing it up will help it.
Mad that- as far as my searches tell me- about 90 years separate these two mobile media players:
