I have two WiiMs in the house. One where I run it into another DAC, and one where I’m using the onboard one. Their integration with my NAS via DNLA can be a bit clunky at times, but mostly it’s smooth enough. Frustrating they don’t have Apple Music native. Generally they’ve been a good solution though overall. I think if you use one of the streaming services that they are specifically configured for, they would be better. The quality of the onboard DAC on the Pro is really very decent.
I’m probably not really using them optimally, as they are mainly just acting as a bridge from my NAS, since assholes Synology dropped support for USB output. So I’m using the Synology app as well as the WiiM one, and the combo is a bit messy. Main reason is playlists built up over years, which I can’t replicate in the WiiM app.
Sorry to hijack but I’ll be after a digital only streamer (to go into a seperate Pre/DAC) that supports Spotify Lossless, and others, is it just easiest to pick up a Wiim Pro for example? Ive a Yamaha WXC-50 which works well but does not support Spotify Lossless.
As I gather any difference between the Wiim Pro and Plus is just on the DAC side?
I realise I’ve just missed the boat on the excellent Black Friday deals but hey!
Sorry… Wasn’t much use to @Grandiloquence …I was messaging when the multiple long ad breaks came on ch4 catch-up …I was watching a series I am quite hooked on.
I used the wiim pro and now the ultra for streaming qobuz and radio paradise. I don’t use it for streaming from NAS / pc based audio file server…so did not want to possibly mis lead the chap. The wiim is in my main system…it replaced the Sneaky …
I really like the UI also the steady improvements to the software which is well supported. I was in on the early days when for example there was no album art on Radio Paradise…now we get that plus track jumping.
Can’t really comment on ultimate sound quality as I’m old with some HF missing nowadays…
The thing is with these wiims is the pricing …with all the flexibility…build quality… support…I think they are a bargain. I got the Ultra during some big discounts…I liked the idea of the screen
The Wiim Pro is great.
Pro Plus if you want to use it as an analogue input for say a TT and then spdif into a Dac.
I’ve got a Pro Plus here on nice linear power..
It has been bullet proof from an operational pov.
I can hear it has some digital glare / harshness compared to the quite a lot more expensive Sonore Ultrarendu.
I can compare them back to back and have done blind testing (with helpful impartial assistant).
Can pick the Wiim everytime on certain complicated tracks.
The Ultrarendu is just cleaner and more composed.
I even switched Ultrarendu and Wiim around on coax Vs optical. Still the same. So yes there are differences with Streamers and the Wiim can be bettered imho.
Noise rejection I reckon?
ASR tested the Wiim and say it is bit perfect. I suppose it is rejecting the rest that comes down the pipe?
But for the money and everyday use through ‘normal’ kit, most would be Wiim happy.
But something like the Ultrarendu Sig and i guess the Lumin do raise the bar.
Added. The Wiim Ultra which I had on test sounded identical to the Pro and Pro plus.
It has a configurable USB port.
Can be either stream output or I guess File input (I didn’t try that though).
