The all-new shiny cockpunch thread (Part 1)

Love them or hate them, they are an awesome live band who generate an almost godlike experience for their fans.

At 75 million + record sales they are doing something absolutely right, I’d say.

Confession time: I keep trying to see how Oasis derives from The Beatles but just can’t hear it. Can you give some examples?

I’m pretty sure Crazy Frog got close to those numbers. Not really a valid measure of talent.

Britpop came as a breath of fresh air to mainstream music to my ears, and Oasis produced some genuinely anthemic tunes - love it or loathe it, it really was the sound of a generation.

As people the Gallaghers were, and still very-much are, an utterly obnoxious pair of irritating arseholes of course.

Just try listening to them :man_shrugging:

For the national anthem definition of a turgid dirge that brainless people still sing along to.

Sigh. You’re one of those. You’re dead to me :skull:

Posted this a number of months ago. I can’t think of the last time I listened to them. But they were most definitely, not maybe, the sound of my generation.

I had just turned 17 when Definitely Maybe was released. You either sat in the Grunge, Hip Hop, tartan techno or Indie camp. Tartan techno was in it’s death throes and those in Indie camp were mainly listening to stuff that was at least a few years old (Roses, Scream). None of it felt like ours. We had missed the summer of love, Kurt Cobain had just killed himself and Love is All Around had been at number one forever.

When Oasis and Britpop arrived, that was ours. All of the tribes united under it even if it was your second genre. My Techno mates loved it, my grunge mate adopted it even the hip hop guys got it. You could go to see a few up and coming bands then head to a rave, go back to a house and listen to The Chronic or Doggystyle without anyone raising an eyebrow.

One of my most memorable nights was queueing up for Oasis Tickets outside Virgin Records for Loch Lomond in 96. I was working in a club at the time and went straight from my work to queue up with my mates, it must have been a quarter of a mile long. Everyone had a carry out, spliffs were everywhere, guys on acid, the lot. Folk playing guitars, ghetto blasters, car sound systems and everyone singing too. When we finally got to the front about 11am the next morning we were elated.

The gig itself was our Woodstock/Spike Island, brilliant times. Looking back yes It sounds generic, shite bands were everywhere but it certainly didn’t feel it at the time.

No, it really isn’t and it certainly isn’t only about talent anyway, but the numbers are a definite indicator that they are doing something very right for a lot of people.

Had a bit of a shit day at work today so a couple of us have gone for a pint…

Every fucking song on the jukebox for the last half hour has been fucking Oasis ffs. Barmaid says it’s been like that since they opened.

Exactly. TTF were one of the more successful outfits. There were loads of them QFX, QTEX and Ultrasonic being some of the more well known ones. Cassettes tapes recorded from cassettes tapes recorded from cassette tapes recorded from bootlegs from clubs such as Hanger13, The Metro and Fubar were the order of the day.
Stuff like this

or this

were the order of the day. Lots of Dutch Techno too.

Our neighbours. Their fencing contractor has cut back our leylandii hedge so much that our gardener says it will never grow back. Went to discuss the situation with them tonight and got nowhere.

We’re looking at having to spend hundereds of pounds putting in a new border with a variety of mature bushes in front of the damaged area in order to disguise the big hole in the hedge.

They think they’ve done nothing wrong. Impossible to speak to these people. They won’t let you finish a sentence or make your point. Just so rude.

If they can’t be civil, don’t procrastinate, litigate.

If you cut a Leylandii back to brown it will never grow new again. Their fencing contractor will know that so there is no excuse.

To replant, look into Laurel. It’s easy to maintain and will grow any height / width quickly so can annoy.
