The Milk Float Thread

Yes. But I want a car that works on British roads. The S-Class, BTW, was uncomfortable on Dutch motorways.

On the French theme, the Citroen C6 Excellence has truly astonishing seats. I’ve sat in much less comfortable sofas.

Yeah, I had a CX back in the late 80s. It was the base model, but very, very comfortable.

There are exceptions - the Panny’s seats are superb, easily the most comfy of any car I’ve owned :ok_hand:

which ones has it got? 18-way, 14-way, standard sports?

I had the 18-way heated and ventilated ones on the Macan, and they were terrible, I could never get comfy.

On the 911, I have the Sports bucket seats, which are completely unadjustable apart from forwards/backwards and they are way more comfortable

It has the 14 way (not sports) seats :+1:

Nver mind charging, we are thinking about having a Powerwall put in and this would mean never paying more than 5p/kWh for any electricity.

As I’m a tall fat bastard I find the worst aspects of most car seats is under thigh support, mainly because they seem to be engineered for shortarse waifs. My old LS400 had very comfy pews, zero side support but very comfortable and seat cushion fore / aft adjustment which helped a lot.
An old Sitroen BX had comfy seats too I seem to remember but the seatback was too narrow for my manly girth so wasn’t the best.

Yeah it’s only four hours per night, but if you have a 7kW charger that will probably be enough for a full electric car, let alone a hybrid. Makes it cost to free to run, you’d only spend £100-ish on fuel a year.

If you want comfort then you don’t tend to find that in a German car unless you’re driving on German roads.

If you want comfy seats which are supportive and have under thigh support then I’ve not found much better than Volvo tbh.

However the most comfortable and lovely ride I’ve had is my dearly departed and much maligned Renault Vel Satis. Bought for £2.5K and did 85,000 miles for me before it started to fall apart.

Possibly… Here’s a long study by the EU, it also concludes that plenty needs to be done about recycling of batteries etc - Frinstance Nissan are starting to take batteries that are at 80% possible charge (hence useless in a car) and putting them into charging stations to store cheap overnight leccy which effectively reduces the battery’s lifecycle CO2 emissions:

Along with the C6 and Avantime, peak French.

I love the giant seats in my LS430.

When we were briefly looking at the 2 Series, I was surprised at just how much more comfortable the sports seats were vs the regular ones. They were completely fucked for the Wench though.

The ones in the Galaxy seem pretty comfy so far.

It’s important to remember that the petrol/diesel infrastructure/systems have been around for a century, and the milk float infrastructure is very new and needs to be built up. The only way those will happen is if there is demand.

So I expect the future to have charging stations that draw their electricity from the grid at off-peak times, which will balance the load beautifully (they may also sell it back, I imagine).

I also expect there to be a standard battery system that allows an easy swap. This is probably not trivial - they are heavy, and will need connectors that carry a lot of current and a cooling system as well. These will probably only be installed on motorway service stations, as charging is ok for local driving.

And I agree with you on battery end of life use. They may be mined for the raw materials, but actually using them as lower capacity batteries makes good sense.

Our society tends to wait for a problem before coming up with a solution. It’s annoying, but there it is.

Thought they were generally lined up for home battery use?

I cannot see a truly universal system taking hold because, even at this embryonic stage there are already some rather different philosophies to battery and powertrain fitment taking hold and nobody is going to admit they’re wrong.

Is it not likely to be a BetaMax vs VHS or HD-DVD vs BlueRay thing again, where eventually one format triumphs?

I think that’s an oversimplification. I don’t think it’s a case of manufacturers being dicks to suggest that the battery and motor arrangements of a Renault Twizzy and Tesla Model X might not have much in common. I think the best you could hope for is that the cells themselves are a standard size, shape and connection but that’s as far as it could go.

it is odd, I found the least adjustable seats in my current car, way more comfortable for long journeys, that the 18 way adjustable in the previous car. In the previous car I could never get comfortable and was forever adjusting the position…

The sports seats with no adjustment apart from forwards/backwards, are a perfect shape for comfort and driving.
