18% ! WTF ?
Surely the (mandatory) universal education of children is a marker of first-world status, no ? To be fair, there’s a big difference between missing 10% of classes (bunking off one day a fortnight) and just not going to school at all. But still I don’t recall significant non-attendance being an issue even at a level above one or two kids per class of 30, say 5%, when I was at school.
Never mind NEET over 18’s, has the state just given up on this many actual children ?

No, but it is a significant thing to deal with and has been worse as a result of lockdown and the changes following. School staff are literally doorknocking on the families in this category.

I went to the district’s ‘sink’ school - the only acceptable reason for non-attendance was pregnancy or borstal, and it was strictly enforced. No wonder towns like Middlesborough are overrun with feral yoot. 18% is a fucking disgrace.

I remember we turned up at the start of one term to find one of our number not present. After a few days it became known that he was in borstal (conveniently we had one less than 5 miles away) after being found to have shagged his 14-year old girlfriend. He was 15. I don’t know if their misbehaviour came to light because she fell pregnant. We were the local grammar school but teenage hormones were no respecters of academic standards.
Tragically a couple of years previously we’d got back to find our friend MB not present. He was in hospital being treated, as far as that was possible, for advanced melanoma. He didn’t make it …
I’m picking up a 12kg eBay purchase from Runcorn on my way to Settle tomorrow. It’s solid not liquid though and completely unswallowable.
