Sadly, I’m not sure that description will cut it when the rarities committee consider your submission.
There was at least one spotted near there in December
With that additional information the record should sail through.
White headed, with a relatively light brown body all over. Could well believe a 2m windspan, given its size relative to the road (it was maybe 3m above the road).
Sounds good.
Like a flying barn door is an often used description. (not to rarity committees, obvs) but “very” broad (and long, of course) wings are a key feature.
One of the Red-throated Diver nests I’ve been monitoring have a chick and it’s growing fast
They had two but they seem to have lost one. Disappointing, but by no means unusual.
Largest seabird in the North Atlantic. With a 6’ wingspan, Gannets in flight are an impressive sight.
What an amazing shot!
Impressive bird (and image).
That’s a superb image Paul - amazing looking birds.
Gives no idea of scale, which is no reflection on the great shot
I will never forget sailing near Ortac rock (close to Alderney)
(We had swapped charts from the Channel crossing to Approaches to Alderney and forget to change the scale so got a bit closer than we intended.)
There is a huge gannet colony on the rock and to see them feeding at close quarters and the speed they hit the water in the dives is amazing.
Unforgettable.
The surviving Red-throated Diver chick seems to be growing by the day, another week or so and I reckon it will be as big as the adult.
I’ve followed Pete Walkden for ages on twitter and his photographs of the White Tailed Eagles in and around Mull are phenomenal - this one is from a couple of years ago but check that wingspan
The closest I’ve ever got to one in the wild was when I was youth hostelling on Skye in 1984 and sitting on the beach at Broadford when one swooped down over my head to get a fish - fucking shat myself as I never heard a thing and the size of it was incredible.
Lovely shot Paul
This one stopped off at M&S for a meal deal and flew home shortly after.
