Another influx of Goldcrests, a number of them were obviously recovering from the journey and were uninterested in my presence. I could have easily picked some of them up.
Great shots Paul they are like lightning
The westerlies have put paid to eastern arrivals but that doesn’t mean there won’t be, this is Shetland after all, and stranger things have happened.
I did see the Funzie SEOwl again, even though it was >150m away
Even when there are few migrants to find, there’s always something to whet the appetite.
This absolute brute of a Glaucous Gull spent all of 5 minutes on Loch of Funzie before flying off. I expect it will return in the coming days.
Unit!
A couple more from yesterday
Great Northern Diver, with a damaged/deformed lower mandible
Siberian (tristis race) Chiffchaff
From today, the long staying Winchat
and a female Blackcap
Sparrowhawks are not common here, so I was pleased to get such good views of this one, this afternoon at Tresta.
A Merlin (at the same site as the Sparrowhawk) flushed everything out of the garden I was just about to check ![]()
Looks wired
You don’t think any of these birds are actually wild, do you?
They’re all on wires, I just forgot to photoshop that one out ![]()
Just being flippant, but also how hunger can drive you
Your photos and how you get them are always a sense of devotion and skill, and appreciated
So was I ![]()
A Merlin perched on a wire at Baelens surveying its territory was unexpectedly attacked by a Hooded Crow.
It was obviously well pissed off with the Hoodie so proceeded to extract its revenge.
A decent influx of Redwing overnight with numbers in the low hundreds. I expect there will be many more before long.
To my surprise, I’ve seen a couple down here already doing some berry stripping - harbingers of a bitter winter perhaps?
Possibly ![]()
Likely to be a better indicator than the Met Office can manage.
At last, an informed article relating to bird migration in a national newspaper. Who’d a thunk it?
The video of the Desertas Petrel chasing a hurricane is amazing.
Oh, and I love Tina Zellmer’s illustrations! ![]()
Quiet today, overnight Northerlies and a clear sky seems to have cleared everything out.
A couple of migrants
Siberian race (tristis) Chiffchaff
and a juvenile Ringed Plover
The Chiffchaff picture is dreamy!
