That’s the Exmoor way

Or poisoned carcases more like - “Oi put 'em out fer thur fockziz mate…!”

But yeah, farmings just want everything that isn’t livestock dead, and fuck the consequences. I don’t know if we have a livestock losses compensation scheme, but even if we do, they’ll still try and kill the birds for the sheer joy of killing…

Wheatears are all now on their breeding territories, the males looking particularly smart

Dunlin arrived last week and are calling and displaying in almost every part of the island

Whimbrel are finding their mates and numbers seem to up on last year for this rare breeding bird

and Great Northern Divers in breeding plumage are offshore at almost every location, looking good, even in the rain

The magic of Spring!

First Red-necked Phalarope of the season, even in the rain they’re spectacular looking birds.

Amazing to think that this Starling sized bird has spent the entire Winter off the Pacific coast of S. America and made it back to its breeding grounds on Fetlar.

Aren’t they just ?

Nesting pair returning to the garden wall by the kitchen.

We’ve got a pair nesting right outside our bedroom window.

These things are a bugger to get near. I snuck up on them at a watering hole on top of some cliffs. One twig trod on, snap! Off they went…

Clumsy bugger

Look like Griffon Vultures.

Just common migrants passing through at the moment. However, some things are very rarely encountered, it’s taken me ten years to see a pair of Red-throated Divers mating.

On the shore of a small lochan where they’ve nested for (at least) the last five years.

Red Necked Phalarope numbers are on the increase, including my first males of the year.

Just listening to Nightjars. Eurasion and Red Necked singing away. The latter is like a bass barritone frog that can hold a tune, very distinctive and pleasant. Merlin ID to thank for this. Both within 50m, no chance of seeing them mind.

Absolutely love that app.

Walking back to my car I heard a familiar “pik-pik” call and these two dropped onto the loch, right in front of me.
