Mythology is fun!
Cerberus, the multi-headed hell-hound and guard dog of the Underworld, gets its name from the root Indo-European word ḱerberos, which evolved into the Greek word κerberos, which gradually changed to cerberus when it went from Greek to Latin.
“ḱerberos” means “spotted”.
Hades, the ancient Greek god of the dead and riches, and the King of the underworld, literally named his pet dog, Spot.
