I read about a blind taste test where the cheapest gin (possibly Gordons) and most expensive (strongly flavoured) tonic came out on top, and second place was one of the more expensive and strongly flavoured gins with a cheap tonic. The expensive gins and expensive tonics together ranked lowest.
Ages ago so I may not be entirely accurate, but that was the gist of it
and? Gordons is an excellent gin.
I would accept the argument for poor or lightly aromatic gin plus flavoured tonic as apposed cheap gin plus flavoured tonic.
That balance seems appropriate.
For me, it appears to be that decent flavoured gins plus simple tonic is the winner.
