I watched it with Lauren, 14. She’s just done a big project on A Christmas Carol in Eng Lit. She thought it was great. She picked up straight away that Mrs Cratchit didn’t have a munificent cousin in America and might have obtained the cash for Tiny Tim’s medication by other means…
The language thing is out of the box anyway, she’s been in the car with me too many times…
Watched Star Wars. Lots of stuff the nerds will moan and troll about but I really enjoyed it. It was authentic Star Wars from start to finish, warts and all.
Given what the BBFC will let her watch in a year’s time I guess I wasn’t thinking of 14 year old children. They go through that transition where they learn about risky stuff by watching it while we still protect them from it actually happening to them.
Of course, it’s still horrible though. I just don’t get it and never have. I think I was the wrong age when the first one came out (13) and thought it was dreadful shite. The movies have got mostly worse since and recently have started to turn around and kiss their own arse. The last one… Hahaha hahaha!!! WANK!
I’m actually looking forward to seeing this so I can rip it apart.
I think you have to have seen your first Star Wars movie when you are young to feel nostalgic about it. For me, I was at the age when it just seemed the cornyest load of shit, with a gossamer thin story, terrible acting, with trite dialogue. The fucking aliens in stupid costumes, the family members that pop up that none of them know anything about over and over again…
I fucking hate it.
There is a guy in the village who is a camera man for BBC Southeast, is a complete movie buff and has been to film school. He’s Star Wars mad. He will take down other movies for having shakey plot lines, bad science, or whatever but gets massively defensive about Star Wars. I’ve explained to him that it’s nostalgia and that all the movies, without exception are shit but he starts getting all heated up. Obviously, my mind was made up at an age where things seemed more black and white, I’d give less of a shit these days (I have equally trenchant feelings about Kate Bush and Genesis for instance) and I guess so were his…
I think it’s possible to know they are a bit shit and also love them at the same time. Me and a mate were all caught up in the “Empire Strikes Back is the best of them, much more dark” etc etc… thing, so eventually one night we decided lets watch it on bluray, on my projector setup… should be awesome. After about 45 mins, we both admitted it was actually really quite shit, and Luke Skywalker is actually an idiot. Turned it off and watched something else. But I still love the whole thing, and went to see the new film and really enjoyed it.
